Space Maintainers in Gordon

Manage Premature Baby Tooth Loss With Space Maintainers

Space maintainers are used when a child loses a baby tooth prematurely. This is usually because of extensive decay, dental trauma or gum, and tooth infection. They serve the purpose to keep the gap open, preventing the neighbouring tooth from shifting. This allows for the natural and healthy growth of the adult tooth.
If you are unsure if your child requires it, our dentists are more than happy to do a general oral examination. Book an Appointment.

How Do They Work?

There are two types of space maintainers; Fixed or Removable.
Removable: These are common against older kids, as they are more likely to take them out and more likely to maintain better oral habits. We advise parents to keep a close eye to make sure they don’t get lost.
Fixed: A permanent metal string that is held down with dental cement on one or more teeth.
To get the most benefit we advise children to avoid eating hard and chewy food until the adult tooth starts growing.
Which one is best for your child depends on your child’s age and other factors. Once you or your child start seeing the adult teeth growing, quickly book an appointment to get the situation assessed.
Space maintainers are very cost-effective and help to prevent the need for braces and other similar alternatives.
